Recycled PET:
Approximately 31% of plastic bottles produced in the United States are made from a material called PolyEthylene Terephtalate, "PET" or "PETE". Usually clear or green, the plastic is mostly used for consumer goods such as soda bottles and food jars. According to the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR), in 2006, the total number of pounds of PET bottles and jars available in the U.S. for recycling was 5.424 billion. Among which, over 45 billion plastic containers end up in landfills. Such a high production volume and low recovery rate makes finding uses for post-consumer plastics imperative. If the current rate of manufacturing and consumer recycling remains, 40 billion pounds of PET waste will be added to our landfills within only a decade.
Recycled PET is a durable, eco-friendly fabric made from post consumer recycled plastic bottles & containers. Choosing products made from recycled PET promotes a more sustainable path for plastic.
Over the years, Recycled PET has been used mainly to manufacture the following products:
-- Polyester fiber products e.g. carpets, sleeping bags, car boot linings, clothing, fiberfill and other textile applications
--Thermoformed sheet products e.g. laundry scoops, containers for fruit and berries, non-food containers and specialized food packaging.
--Other application e.g. hoses
Think Green Promo is one of the first manufacuturers to make bags from recycled #1 PET plastic. It is our answer to the call of environmental protection. The end result is a perfect example of a forward-looking product that combines social responsiblitity with functionality and style. It is made from 100% post-consumer recycled content (technically it's about 95% to 98% purity due to added reinforce compound). In addition to using less energy to produce, the bag is lightweight, durable and soft. On average, the fabric used to produce each of these bags reclaims about half a dozen to 2 dozen recycled plastic bottles/containers.
By integrating virgin PET resin (usually 20%) into the recycled PET, the fabric can be made stronger and more wear and tear resistant and in the mean time, a little less expensive since virigin PET is cheaper than its recycled counterpart.
